International conference - 60 Years of the European Project

On April 3, 2017, from 9:30 until 17:00 (at the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia, Jēkaba Street 6/8) LIIA will hold a high-level international conference: 60 Years of the European Project

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, we look back on European history, the time when it was shaped by wars. Thanks to Treaty of Rome signed in 1957 and in force since 1958, the European Economic Community (EEC) or common market was founded, and treaty on the European Atomic Community (EURATOM) was also signed. This marked a new integration stage in Europe. The establishment of the EEC had several aims: ensuring peace and stability, economic prosperity, guaranteeing internal security and also increasing the role of Europe in the world.

Liberal values prevail in the European Union and conform to societies’ needs and interests. The treaty of Rome served as the basis for development of a peaceful project – the European Union as we know it today.

Peace, stability and sustainable development within the EU are not self-evident. Consequently, for Latvia as a member of the EU, it is important to talk and to resolve the current topical questions. On April 3, 2017, together with high-level experts we will discuss issues like – prospects of the European project, rebooting the EU’s economy, EU’s Transatlantic and neighbourhood relationships, perspectives of the European Defense Union and security dimension of the Energy Union, as well the vital role of youth in the EU.

The European Union today has become the most successful peacekeeping operation in the history of mankind. The EU has many successful stories, but nowadays it finds itself at a questionable and complicated crossroads. This is why LIIA together with its supporters – the European Commission representation in Latvia and the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia – welcomes you to the event, where we will co-create the future scenarios of the EU’s development.
