A new field of study has arisen due to the enlargement of Europe – there is now a whole group of countries that find themselves wedged between the new EU and Russia, most of whom would like to join the EU and NATO but cannot, no less because Russia views them as her sphere of interest. These countries are very different, ranging from Belarus in the north to Azerbaijan on the shores of the Caspian sea. The authors analyze the situation in general with regard to EU, NATO, and Russian policies toward these “in-between” countries and individually with country case studies on Belarus, Moldova, and Georgia.
