This brochure was the first publication in Latvia on the history, structure and functioning of the European Communities. It gives the history of the EC/EU up to the ratification of the Maastricht treaty as well the basic principles of the Maastricht treaty. An outline of developments between the EC/EU and the Central and Eastern European countries, particularly Latvia until 1992 is also given.
