"Krievijas vēlēšanas: ietekme uz Latvijas - Krievijas attiecībām plašākā Eiroatlantiskajā kontekstā" (2012) | Komentāri

Latvian Institute of International Affairs invites you to a roundtable discussion “RUSSIA’S ELECTIONS: IMPLICATIONS FOR RUSSIAN-LATVIAN RELATIONS IN A WIDER EURO-ATLANTIC CONTEXT” Friday, May 18, 2012, 9:30 - 14:00, Venue: Glass Hall of the „Hotel Bergs”, Elizabete street 83/85 (Bergs’ Bazaar). The working language of the conference is English.

Organizers: Latvian Institute of International Affairs, financial support: The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

The conference will bring together experts, politicians and diplomats from Russia, Germany, Poland and Latvia, including,  Andrey Riabov, Scholar-in-Residence, Carnegie Moscow Centre, Kai-Olaf Lang, Head of Research Unit, SWP, Olaf Osica, Director, Polish Centre for Eastern Studies, Sergey Utkin, Head of Unit, Institute of World Economy and International Relations, (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences, Imants Liegis, Former Minister of Defence and Chairman of the European Affairs Committee of Parliament of Latvia; Ambassador; Fellow of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs, Viktors Makarovs, Parliamentary Secretary, Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others.

The conference will focus on political and economic agenda of “modernization”. Would the recent Russia’s “reset” and modernization agenda with the West be sustainable after political changes take place in Russia? The winner of the Russian presidential elections Vladimir Putin has actively re-launched the idea of integration of neighbouring geopolitical space. May this have repercussions for mutual trust and sustainability of positive relationship? What could and should be done to avoid tensions? What role the EU-Russia dialogue may play in sustaining “modernization” and “reset” agendas?

The rapprochement between the Euro-Atlantic community and Russia has clearly contributed to the considerable improvement of political atmosphere in Latvian-Russian relations.  However, Latvia’s policy towards Russia has until recently been shaped by mixture of security and internal national debates on Russia’s image and Vladimir Putin has actively re-launched the idea of integration of neighbouring geopolitical space. May this have repercussions for mutual trust and sustainability of positive relationship? What could and should be done to avoid tensions? What role the EU-Russia dialogue may play in sustaining “modernization” and “reset” agendas?
