Bleiere, Daina. Ukraina: Eiropas valsts. Rīga: Latvijas Ārpolitikas institūts, 1996.

The first part of book covers the history of Ukraine with special emphasis on the development of the idea of Ukrainian statehood and on the differences in development of territories inhabited by Ukrainians under the rule of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. The second part of the book deals with the political and economic processes in Ukraine in the first five years of independence, particularly the most outstanding aspects of Ukrainian security policy at that time, i.e. the issue of nuclear weapons, relations with Russian and other neighbouring countries, and the attitude toward the Commonwealth of Independent States. An insight into the beginnings of Latvian-Ukrainian relations is also offered.
